Prior to being asked to leave his art school a lecturer said to him, ‘If the need is there you will always paint.’. At the time however there were other needs to consider like those of survival and to that end he worked variously as a labourer, barman, green keeper, grape picker, bus driver and foundry worker until, by chance, he discovered the tools, materials and scale of working that would have been ridiculed by his lecturers. For many years thereafter the need was kept alive by working as an illustrator for a wide variety of clients that included the Financial Times, The Listener, and the Times Supplements.
Aspects of illustration, especially the relationship between narratives and visual puns, also influenced the development of his own ideas as an artist and printmaker.
A dormant love affair with etching was rekindled at Putney School of Art and as a member of Artichoke Printworkshop in London. In 2003 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers.
